Exploring London on a Budget: Free Things to Do in the City

Updated: Jan 11

London may be known for its high costs, but there are plenty of incredible experiences you can enjoy for free! Here’s a list of must-see spots that showcase the best of London without breaking the bank.

1. Sky Garden

Consider Sky Garden as the new London Eye – with even better views and none of the expense! Located across the river from The Shard, it offers stunning, panoramic city views surrounded by lush greenery. Booking in advance (a few weeks to a month) is essential, as time slots fill up quickly. Go for an early time slot if possible to enjoy a less crowded experience. This spot is perfect for photos, capturing the beauty of London from above.

2. Walk to Tower of London and Tower Bridge

If you’re near the Sky Garden, take a short walk to the historic Tower of London and Tower Bridge. These iconic landmarks are fantastic for photos. For the best shots of Tower Bridge, head to the Tower of London area along the river. Whether you decide to simply enjoy the view or cross Tower Bridge on foot, this area is steeped in history and charm.

3. Buckingham Palace and Big Ben

These quintessential London landmarks are just a 20-minute walk apart, making it easy to visit both in one outing. While you can’t enter Buckingham Palace, you can admire the palace grounds and take a scenic stroll around the gates. On the way to Big Ben, you’ll spot classic red phone booths, perfect for a quintessentially British photo op – though some are best admired from the outside!

4. Natural History Museum

London boasts an abundance of free museums, and the Natural History Museum is a fantastic stop, especially for families. Kids (and adults!) will love the fossil and dinosaur exhibits. This massive museum has much to explore, so even a short visit can be rewarding. And with free admission, it’s an easy add-on to any London itinerary.

5. The Butterfly Trail at Outernet

This was a surprising find for us! Located near Covent Gardens, the Butterfly Trail is an outdoor 3D immersive video experience with mesmerizing visuals on massive screens surrounding you. It’s a unique place to take a break and be transported by incredible digital art displays. This hidden gem is a must-see if you’re in the area!

6. Borough Market

Though free to enter, it’s hard to leave Borough Market without sampling something delicious. This is London’s largest and oldest outdoor market, packed with stalls offering a variety of foods from around the world. Whether you’re in the mood for a snack or a full meal, Borough Market is an unbeatable spot for food lovers to explore and indulge.

London has so much to offer without spending a dime, from breathtaking views to historic sites and cultural hotspots. These free activities make it possible to experience the best of the city while keeping your budget in check.
