Hawaii holds a special place in our hearts, and Maui is one destination we keep going back to. Despite the fires in 2023 impacting parts of the island, Maui remains a magical place to visit with plenty of free, family-friendly spots to explore. Here are some of our favorite free activities you can enjoy on your next trip to Maui:
1. Nākēlele Blowhole
Located on the west side of Maui, the Nākēlele Blowhole offers a stunning natural spectacle. The moderate hike down to the blowhole is rewarded with breathtaking views of waves crashing into the rocks, and water shooting through natural holes. Along the way, look out for a heart-shaped hole in the rock—a perfect photo opportunity! While the trail can be steep, it’s manageable if you’re in good shape. Be sure to bring water as it gets hot, and shade is limited.

2. Airport Beach (Kahekili Beach)
Despite its name, Airport Beach has nothing to do with an airport (anymore). This beach gets its nickname from an old runway that used to end here. Today, it’s a long stretch of pristine sand surrounded by popular hotels and resorts. The calm waters make it an excellent snorkeling spot with frequent turtle sightings. Don’t miss the boardwalk that stretches over a mile along the shoreline—ideal for a morning jog or a relaxing stroll.

3. Turtle Beach (Maluaka Beach)
True to its name, Turtle Beach is the perfect spot to see turtles in their natural habitat, both in and out of the water. Located on the south side of the island near Kihei, this beach is a fantastic snorkeling destination and a great place to relax. If you’re not staying nearby, consider exploring the charming town of Kihei on your way back to your hotel or Airbnb.
4. Baldwin Beach Park
Looking for a quiet beach away from the crowds? Baldwin Beach Park is your answer. Unlike many other beaches on Maui, it’s not near resorts, so it’s less touristy. The setting here is picture-perfect with palm trees, a lifeguard stand, and a stunning island backdrop. In fact, we used this spot for family photos with Flytographer, and it was absolutely perfect. Bring your camera—you’ll want to capture the vibe here.

5. Road to Hana
No trip to Maui is complete without experiencing the Road to Hana. This scenic drive is all about the journey, not the destination. While the drive itself is free, note that some attractions along the way may charge admission or require reservations. One highlight of our trip was the Waimoku Falls hike, a breathtaking trek through lush greenery to a majestic waterfall. Pack snacks, water, and plenty of patience for this adventure!
6. Haleakalā National Park
One of Maui’s most iconic experiences is watching the sunrise from the summit of Haleakalā National Park. For just $1 per vehicle, you can reserve a spot for this breathtaking moment—an absolute must for any traveler.
The drive to the summit takes about 1.5 hours from Kahului, so plan to leave early—aim to arrive by 4:30 AM to secure a good viewing spot.
As you ascend, you'll notice the dramatic change in elevation, and once at the top, you’ll witness a truly magical sight: the sun rising above a blanket of clouds.
Pro tip: Temperatures at the summit can drop to the 30s or 40s (°F), so dress warmly or bring a cozy blanket.
Since this experience is incredibly popular, reservations are required in advance. Be sure to book your spot here
Final Thoughts
Maui offers endless opportunities for exploration and connection with nature, many of which are completely free. Whether you’re hiking to the Nākēlele Blowhole, snorkeling at Airport Beach, or taking in the serene beauty of Baldwin Beach Park, these spots are sure to create unforgettable memories. So pack your bags, bring your sense of adventure, and get ready to fall in love with Maui all over again!
